The Love-Pentagon

We’ve all had the blessing, I hope, of being in love. And no doubt we’ve heard about love-triangles – some of us having had the misfortune of getting entangled in one. I on the other hand, have had the ‘pleasure’ of being involved in a love pentagon – yeah, that’s the shape you get when you count the number of people who were in that particular mix.  I was 12 years-old and was attending baptism and confirmation classes at my church with this bunch of funky kids. Meet the characters….

Akinyi: the “makreki” ha ha. At the time, our huge new sanctuary was under construction and we loved to explore and play in it before classes started. Now Akinyi ocassionally went alone with boys into the upper rooms – to do what I’m not sure πŸ™‚ but to us, it was a big thing and we got exhausted from our imaginations running wild.
Peter: class clown and offcial fun machine. Our teacher, the Vicar was really tough and Peter was the only one who dared crack jokes and prank people in class. Nothing interesting ever really happened which he did not inititate and though sometimes he was one of the boys in Akinyi’s entourage, he’s the one who also led delegations to the upper rooms to spy on Akinyi & Co.

Jane: cry baby πŸ™‚ Sio kwa ubaya but Peter liked to tease her a lot and sometimes it went too far and she’d end up crying saying ‘nitaku-say’. Their little fights were all the more interesting because Jane was tall and big while Peter was a ka-short terrorist.
Eric: cool cat, period. Enyewe at 12, he was quite the hunk πŸ™‚ A quiet, reserved, well-mannered boy he was. He walks into the church and all the girls (me included) start wishing “please please let him sit next to me” and then if he sits next to you, you get tongue-tied and start blushing. Talk about stress πŸ™‚
Me: Just me.
Now, this food-chain love-pentagon started with Jane, who liked Peter of course. They happened to be in the same class in school and now at church she was always telling how Peter did this and Peter did that and Peter is so funny and Peter this…..on & on….It was obvious she was smitten and I guess that’s why he like teasing her so much and making her cry. Bad boy.
Now Peter, apart from teasing Jane did not think her worthy of special attention but instead directed his energies towards, you guessed it, Akinyi! Woi! Aki he used to look at her with dreamy eyes – like she was a princess and the days he was not in the upper room plan were the days he’d lead the spying delegation. Now you get it.
Akinyi obviously had no time for cheeky boys like Peter and preferred hanging out with the more mature-looking guys. This drove Peter crazy with envy but what could the poor boy do? Akinyi liked Eric so much and never understood why he never seemed interested in girls. She did all she could to get his attention – real flirting kama kwa movie. (actually to us it was a movie, lol.) If Eric was seated alone somewhere, we all knew to stay away coz he was her territory.
She didn’t know that the reason Eric was not interested in her and the other girls was because he liked only Me. Yes, me. Well, did I like him back? Did we become childhood sweethearts? That is a story for another day.
